1. Choosing a Topic

To help find a science fair project use the Science Buddies topic finder.  Simply click on the Launch Tool button below and answer a few simple questions to get suggestions.  Then choose a topic which is both appropriate and interesting.  Make sure to print out your experiment from the Science Buddies website.

Once you've chosen a topic you need to figure out what scientific question you want to answer for your project.  A good question starts with How, What, When, Who, Why, or Where?

Make sure:

  • This is a question you can conduct a fair test to answer.  A fair test is an experiment in which you only change one factor (variable) and keep all other conditions the same.  If you can't conduct a fair test you need to find a different project.
  • Your experiment should involve factors or traits that you can measure with a number.

Next, print out a Science Fair Proposal form, fill it out, and get it signed both by your teacher and a parent/guardian.
